Animal Rights And Medical Research
The issue of animal rights and medical research has, and always will be, controversial.
Parkinson, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and Tuberculosis are just some of the diseases that have
directly benefited from medical research using animals. It is worth noting that none of the above
diseases have permanent cures. However, animal research has been an integral component
towards treatments, protocols and ultimately finding a cure. Based on these facts I support the
use of animals for medical research. I recognize that inherent to this process animals may suffer.
It is well documented that lab animals will potentially suffer from pain, loneliness and/or
boredom. The stress, isolation and boredom cause some animals to develop neurotic behaviors.
These behaviors include incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their
hair and biting their skin. Others shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their
cages and their blood pressures can spike drastically. Conversely, these animals are well-fed,
well-maintained and even establish bonding relationships with their handlers throughout their
lives. Once again I believe that any human life saved, or even quality of life improved justifies
the use of animals for medical research.
Animal rights activists believe and claim that humans and animals are equal; and thus
they should be treated equally. I feel that humans and animals are not equal, and therefore the
death of an animal is not the same as the death of a person. For that reason, animals that die for
science--for the sake of saving human lives--must be considered ‘ethical sacrifices’ to the extent
that it will contribute to the advancement of medical science, cure diseases and humanity.
Furthermore, animal rights supporters label scientists as ‘cruel’ for allowing animals to
die in medical experiments. Conversely, it is interesting to note that they do not oppose people
who kill animals to eat. Ninety nine percent (99%) of animals’ deaths are caused by farmers--for
