ThanksQ.1 CASE STUDY KOFIASE STRUGGLES TO KEEP PACE WITH INDUSTRY COMPETITION In1986 the Board of KoFase Entreprise, a small scale business enTty in the staTonery industry in Ghana recruited Mr. Boateng, a young graduate of GIMPA with a Bachelors Degree in AccounTng as Chief ExecuTve O±cer. At the job interview Mr. Boateng declared; “I am motvaTed To join Kofase because oF iTs massive poTental in The indusTry, I inTend To join a Team oF dedicaTed sTa± To move The company To even greaTer heighTs and I will work hard To make The company The naton’s mosT valuable sTatonery dealer” ²he current situaTon at KoFase however does not support the in coming CEO’s assumpTon of a “ team of dedicated sta± ” as the sta³ appears not moTvated enough to support their new boss to implement his vision. ²he staTonery industry appears crowded with too many compeTtors and it will take only superior compeTTve and markeTng strategies for smaller companies like KoFase to survive. Since assuming o±ce, Mr.Boateng has overhauled KoFase’s strategy , structure and culture. ²he transiTon from a young company at its incepTon to iniTal Growth will not be easy given that there are much stronger and be´er resourced players all operaTng in this rather busy industry. Strategic MarkeTng intervenTons, dominance in providing the value consumers are looking for and the mix of businesses will be key in any new strategy. ²ypical of most small scale businesses in Ghana, the owners of the company have also invested in a number of industry related acTviTes such as producTon of jo´ers and exercise books for school children and have operaTons in some areas of the country notably, the Greater Accra, AshanT, Brong Ahafo and the Western Regions. Across its businesses KoFase employs a total of 41 sta³ and has a turnover of twelve million (Ghc12, 000,000) Ghana cedis. ²he company’s assets as at last year end include the following: Ghc µreehold - 500,000
