check grammar1 EDF3694. Schools and Society Xijie Zhang Paper 1 Orestes Brownson and Horace Mann’s Education In this paper, I will argue that Orestes Broenson was in correct in his assessment of the undemocratic aspects of Horace Mann’s plans for common schooling and establishment of normal schools. I will support my opinion by discussing how Mann’s views are more appropriate than that of Orestes Brownsons. Mann was effort to reform common schooling, the benefit of good school buildings, good religion is an important factor in common schooling and female teachers were good for the students. But in Brownson mind people need the special education, religion is not a value of human life, and schools should be governed by men. Those two people had opposite views about education system, however I would like to agree with Mann’s views. Firstly, according to Mann’s views, the common school can give best education to students. “In this Commonwealth, who depend upon common schools for instruction, may have the best education which those schools can be made to impart” (Tozer and Senese, 61). The common school was good for students which can provide the best education to the student. However, Brownson against the common school view from Mann’s. He thought Special education was better than the common school. In his mind the common school was too oppressive and rigid, but the special education had more individuality. In my opinion, the common school was better than the Special education. Because the common school can assure all of student to accept the education, and they can get more completes and uniform knowledge in their life. Secondly, Mann supported Prussian school system appearing in education. The Prussians was free, universal, and compulsory, so every people can accept education.
