Vocabulary Charles' Law The law states the volume of a gas varies directly with the absolute temperature of the gas if the pressure is constant. Factors A f ecting Gas Pressure In the prior lesson you were introduced to several factors that impact gas pressure. You have seen that pressure decreases as the volume of a container increases. You have also seen that as the number of particles in a container increase, the pressure increases. This unit considers the impact of temperature on pressure. Temperature Camping can be a fun vacation, but there are certain things you need to remember when you cook meals over the F re. For instance, it is not a good idea to put a can of soup over the camp F re before you open the can. If you did, the can would heat up and potentially could explode. The kinetic-molecular theory explains this. The air molecules in the soup can gain more kinetic energy from the camp F re heat. The kinetic energy causes the air molecules in the can to move faster which means they hit the container walls more frequently and with more force. As the pressure in the can continues to increase, the inner pressure may be stronger than the strength of the can. This would result in an explosion. Charles’ Law French scientist Jacques Charles (1746-1823) researched the e f ect of temperature on gas volume when the pressure is kept constant. It is important to note that Charles completed his research using the absolute temperature scale. The absolute temperature scale is the Kelvin scale.
